Hurricane Floyd Data
Finding Hurricane Floyd
- If you are not already there, go to the SCOOP Website
- Go to the Data page
- Notice that you can search for storms by name or year and you can search for collections
- Search for hurricane Floyd, but do not put a year
D1. How many storms come up?
- Notice the key at the top of the page
D2. Is there data for any of these storms?
- Click on the plot icon next to Floyd (1999)
- On the right side of the page, change Draw Bounding Box to Show Point Information
- Choose the point where the storm changes from a tropical storm to a category 1 hurricane
D3. What is the pressure of Floyd at this point?
- Go back to the SCOOP storm search results page with the Floyd storms
- Click on the list icon next to Floyd (1999)
- Notice there is a list of all the points with the statistics at each point
D4. How many separate times does Floyd turn into a category 3 hurricane?
- Go back to the SCOOP storm search results page with the Floyd storms
- Click on the globe icon (the Google Earth link) next to Floyd (1999)
- If you do not have Google Earth, you can download it for free by going to the Google Earth Website
- All the paths of the storms during the 1999 hurricane season will show
- Under the Places section on the left side of the page, make sure that the Temporary Places folder is expanded
- Expand the 1999 Storms folder
- Click the checkmark next to the 1999 Storms to uncheck all storms
- Scroll down to Floyd and check the box next to Floyd
- Expand the Floyd folder
- Click on the date links to see statistics about the storm at that time
- Click on the date link 1999-09-11 12Z
D5. On this date, what category hurricane was Floyd? D6. What was the wind speed?
- You can continue looking at all of the storms' tracks from 1999 or go back to the SCOOP page and look up other years
Quick Search by Collection
- Go back to the Data page
- Notice the box, Quick Search by Collection, on the left of the Quick Search by Storm box
- Enter in Wind for the keyword and choose Data Collection Name for context
- Press Go!
- All the collections with the word “wind” in their name came up
- Click on the first one: “Bedford Institute of Oceanography WaveWatch 3 (WW3) Extended Lat/Lon…”
